John Cook & Co / Wine & Spirit Merchants / Bairnsdale. No potters stamp. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed Handled Demijohn. Stoneware. Tan top. Impressed. Gallon. 301 mm. 1900s
Good. Looks to have had three chips repaired to the lip, one at the left, one in the middle and one to the right. You can see the white filler in places through the paint, but not the entire extent. Some lacquer from the repair is on the shoulder and flaking slightly. Handle is original and in great nick. Plenty of grime scattered around, this will clean off. Sliver type flake to left base edge. Couple of other nibbled flakes to base edge which are rather small. Some wear to the base edge. Discoloured spots, there is some discoloured wear in places. Scratches including one or two discoloured examples. Solid enough example with the original handle. A better paint job of the lip repairs and a good clean will leave a very solid example. We have sold a John Cook before, that was quite different to this one. Grade: 6.4 Estimate: $200 - 300
