R. D. Pryde / Dundee / Prime Keil Butter. No potters stamp. Household Dairy Salt glaze butter crock. Impressed. 10 pounds. 217 mm. 1880s
Excellent. Robert D Pryde was a merchant in 43 Dock Street, Dundee. Reasonably small flake chip to inner lid seat. Another little flake or two around here. Dark lump to upper lip is a making mark. Small flake to outer lip. Couple of tiny nicks to shoulder edge. A couple of making splits can be seen internally. Couple of pottery pull type small chips under the base. Around the body there are some glaze nicks, most of these look to be little potters blowouts from making, just pinprick type marks to the glaze. A few scratches and minor marks. This is a great piece of pottery, quite a large butter crock. Not one we have seen before. There was a Pryde in South Yarra in the early days making butter, I wonder whether there was some sort of international family connection? Grade: 8.3 Estimate: $150 - 200
