(Crown) / Victorian Selters Water / (Shield with J & M Monogram) / Ballan. (Joske & Morton, Melbourne, Victoria) Aerated Water Selter Salt glaze skittle. Impressed. 7 oz. 192 mm. 1850s
Poor. Restored. The bottom part of this bottle is fully restored, at the front the restoration comes up 37 mm, at the rear about 50 mm. The top and most of the body are original. Crudely made, there are glaze pops around the lip and neck throughout. The impression is very weak, I initially thought it was unmarked! The lower third of the impression is missing as this is where the restoration starts, so just below the shield. A few deep scratches to the original part of the body. Kiln kiss to the right body. Exceptionally rare, early and important piece of pottery! In this skittle shape there is only one good one known from what I can ascertain, possibly one or two other damaged examples. These may come in two sizes? There is another variety with straight sides which is also very rare and definitely comes in two sizes - all are important pieces of early Melbourne aerated water history. Grade: 0 Estimate: $100 - 150
