(Crown) / Victorian Selters Water / (JM within a Shield) / Ballan. No potters stamp. (Joske & Morton, Melbourne, Victoria) Aerated Water Selters Salt glaze. Impressed. 30 oz. 245 mm. 1860s
Excellent. 9 mm very shallow flake to upper left lip, this has an associated 3 x 2 mm very shallow outer lip flake. Perfect base edge, there is one tiny thin nick next to a making mark which is also a making mark. There are a few fine discoloured glaze hairlines across the base edge. A few discoloured areas. Some minor scratches. A few making marks such as a small divot to mid rear. A few minor scratches. Great impression in general, the crown is a tad weak at the top. An extremely rare and important piece of pottery! I have heard of the larger size, but never seen one until now. It has been suggested that the larger examples that are known are actually smaller than this monster! I have just measured the capacity of this beast, 31.5 ounces! Yes, it is huge! Possibly unique in this size, great condition overall, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Grade: 8 Estimate: $3000 - 4000
