D. G. Hamilton . & . Sons / Rutherglen. No potters stamp. (Victoria). Demijohn. Impressed. Tan Top. Wicker basket. Impressed lip. 2 Gallon. 390 mm. 1910s
Very Good. (7). David Hamilton of D. G. Hamilton & Sons, Storekeepers in Rutherglen became insolvent in 1917, this demijohn must date prior to that. Interestingly, we sold a similar demijohn in Auction 46, but it did not have & Sons on it! 25 x 10 mm chip to outer lip has taken out much of the LEN of Rutherglen. Shallow upper lip flake here as well, but not deep enough to take out what is left of the letters, this is over about 17 x 8 mm. Small flake to lip edge near the &. Some other wear around the lip. Wicker is not the best, but that means you can see the body of the demijohn in places which interestingly is fully glazed - often these wicker encased demijohns are unglazed on the body. The base of the wicker is missing, but has been repaired, by the looks of it this was done during its time of use in the 1910s. Copper wires comes down from the handles attaching to a rusty metal strap that goes across the base, under which is a sheet of leather or similar. Plenty of dust, grime, cobwebs, etc. Decent example of a rare demijohn, the first we have sold. Estimate: $200-300
