Cosmopoliet / (Man holding a bottle) / J. J. Melchers wz / Schiedam. Base mark: Fine star. (Netherlands). Spirits. Gin. Dutch Case gin shape. Applied top. Deep Olive Green / Black. 30 oz. 270 mm. 1860s-1870s
Very Good. (8). Some haze. Scuffs and scratches. Magnificent bold and large embossing. Wonderful crude top and neck with folds and curves and making marks through them. Initially we thought that the dip in the lower front lip was just a crude making mark to go with the rest of the crude lip, however, I am not certain. Under the lip here is a rough inclusion which is definitely from making. The mark which is about 5 x 5 mm on some angles looks like a chip with rounded edges, so not like a chip that was formed after an impact but more a making dip. However, this rounded appearance may be from a thin layer of resin - we tried to scrape around the area to find the edge if it has had resin applied and could not. So even after having a very close inspection under direct sunlight, we do not know definitively if this mark is a chip or not. Overall, a wonderful example of a classic bottle. Estimate: $300-600
