Bellarmine jug. Antiquities Bellarmine Handled, bulbous jug with bearded Cardinal Bellarmine decoration to neck and shoulder. Lovely tiger glaze. Quart. 180 mm. 1700s
Excellent. Small lip repair, looks like a shallow sliver at the front of the top lip has been repaired. Light wear around upper lip. 9 x 3 mm shallow flake to one of the ower lip rings, just deeper than the glaze. Pottery blowout at the base of the handle, 8 x 4 mm at its widest. Another blowout to the bear of the Cardinal which has a couple of splits coming from it from manufacture. There are a few more blow outs to be found. Shallow chip to left side body, 6 x 7 mm. Left side base has a shallow flake over 13 x 5 mm, there are some other shallow flakes and nibbles around and under the base, many of these are likely to be from manufacture. Some crude pottery marks to the lower side. The lower part of the glaze on this is a smoky yellow colour, some of this glaze goes under the base. The upper glaze has a wonderful drippy effect down the front, the glaze has a beautiful mottled appearance. A wonderful piece of history, this is a superb looking and rare piece in amazing condition.
