Excellent. In reality, this piece is entirely undamaged, it has a couple of rust stains, but otherwise is Mint. The odd thing about this is that it is unglazed over the body, yet it has the ink stamp for Loy Bros? When this was purchased, it was actually within a wicker casing, which is usually the reason for an unglazed demijohn, but usually they do not have an ink stamp, as it would be covered over. There is a large X incised into the rear shoulder, this goes under the brown glaze, and so is from manufacture. One possibility is that the stamp was incorrectly placed on this cork sealed demijohn (Loy Bros usually have internal screws), the potter realised his mistake prior to glazing and so put the X on there to signify that it was to be used for a different purpose, in this case as a wicker demijohn. Some parts of the stamp in the lower region are illegible. There is a manufacturing split on the internal part of the top. A most unusual demijohn, Loy Bros are nearly always blue lipped demijohns, this is quite a rare variation. Grade: 8.5 Estimate: $50 - 75
