Sold for A$3,500

Sealed English Onion, Coat of Arms on applied seal. Wine Sealed Flared out lip above thin applied rim. Aplpied seal to shoulder bearign coat of arms. Transitional Onion shape. Pontil. Dark Green / Black. Quart. 160 mm. 1700s

Very Good. The thin applied rim around the lip has been repaired over about 50% of the circumference. Damage to this area is common with these extremely early bottles as it is very much a weak spot. This is a rudimentary repair, it is the right shape and colour, but is obvious up close. There is a small 6 x 3 mm flake chip to the lip above this repaired section. There is a 50 mm scratch to the left shoulder, this cannot be felt with the finger nail and so is rather shallow. General light scuffs and scratches throughout. There is reasonably heavy usage wear under the base. There are a few small impact type flake marks to the body. There is some internal dirt to be found. The applied seal has some dints in it, the most noticeable of which is on the right hand side. These are very unusual, they have the appearance of having been ground in parts, but the original folds of the glass seem to fold into the ground parts from the making process. This is an amazing piece of glass, a must for any serious black glass collector. Grade: 7.2 Estimate: $5000 - 6000
