Ferguson's / M. D. / Whisky. Potters Stamp: Doulton / g g / Lambeth // England / 1391 / g g. Spirits Whisky Large back bar decanter in Doulton Artware style. White and brown laid on writing, etched designs within an embossed shield on a highly glazed blue bulbous body over a brown pedestal. Also has a tap hole. Original lid. Very large item. 500 mm without lid. 1880s
Excellent. There is an under glazed BH inscribed on the inner lip. There is a horseshoe fracture to the lip area over 12 x 7 mm on the upper lip, this extends over 14 x 25 mm on the side lip. There is some glue type substance around this mark as if it has been repaired, however, we cannot see a join in the lower section, and so we think this may have been applied to prevent this piece from popping out? There are some scratches to the body around the highly glazed blue section. The right side body has a 4 x 3 mm flake through the glaze. The lower rear body has a 15 x 8 mm manufacturing fault, a lump which has a shallow flake from it. 3 x 3 mm flake just through the glaze on the left pedestal right near the base. Extremely fine glaze hairline / crazing starts from the right rear side on the pedestal and goes around to the left side, this is extremely fine and likely from manufacture. Unusual flaking and shallow chips to the underside of the pedestal base, again this is likely from manufacture. A bit of grime around the body, making marks anfd scuffs. The lid has some light glaze wear to the hobnail pattern around the upper part. The blue outer bulbous part has some glaze scratches. Some minor light wear under the lid where it would sit on the body of this piece. The part that inserts into the decanter has some small glaze flakes / wear spots to the outer edge, the inner edge has a 5 x 5 mm shallow chip alongside a 5 x 8 mm horseshoe fracture. There is a smaller flake around from this. Doulton Artware is highly prized amongst collectors, this is no exception. Extremely big in size, this is extremely rare, only one or two of these are believed to be known to collectors, this is a Worldwide classic item!
