Browne's Victorian / for beautifying and preserving the teeth & gums / (Queen's Head) / Prepared only by Browne & Heale Sandhurst / Cherry Tooth Paste. Pot Lid Tooth Paste Red and purple on white lid. Domed. 80 mm diameter. 1880s
Fair. This has had a poor repair done to it some time ago, which in a way is good, as we can tell you reasonably accurately what was repaired. About a 50 mm section of the lower flange had a chunk missing. This was entirely on the underside. A separate flake has been repaired to the face at around 5 o'clock. This covers 20 x 9 mm, only just touching the bottom of the H in Tooth, and the bottom of the P in Paste. It goes to the outer rim from here with about a 20 mm section of the red border being replaced. The rest of the discolouration is overpainting to blend the original repair in which has horribly discoloured. A little spot of rust to the left of this. Some crazing. Comes with what is likely the original base which has crazing, couple of hairlines and little flakes. An exceptionally rare lid, the repair needs to be done professionally but as can be seen, it is a relatively minor part to the front that needs to be tidied up. It is unlikely that another of these will turn up for sale for some time. Grade: 5.5 Estimate: $4000 - 5000
