Hoffman / 3 1/2 Gal. (Victoria) Pottery Australian Yellow coloured barrel with spigot. About 350 mm. 1920s
Good. Flake at bottom edge, a few other marks to base edge as well. Some scratches to the body. This item is really good, but has had some modification work done which downgrades it. To the right and below the potters stamp a hole has been drilled in this piece, this is about 10 mm in diameter. Likely a breather hole for when a large cork was in the other hole at the top to allow liquid to flow. Being such a large hole at the top, any manner of stuff could enter the liquid inside if the cork were not kept in place, quite a poor design really. So, whilst it is a rudimentary drilling, it may have been done when this item was supplied to the person that it was made for? Regardless, this is a wonderful piece of pottery from one of the early Brunswick potters. Grade: 6 Estimate: $$50.00 - $75.00
