Very Good. One tiny flake to the inner face is a tad discoloured. Some spots of grime and dust. Usage wear in the form of glaze wear and scratches to the glaze. In 1873 Hugh Reid and several partners established Hugh R. Reid and Company as a shipowner. Eleven years later the name of the enterprise was altered to Melbourne Coal Shipping and Engineering Company Limited. The final name change took place in 1895 with the registration of Melbourne Steamship Company. By the turn of the century Melbourne Steamship was firmly in place as a major coastal shipping concern calling in at most Australian ports. At the end of World War 11 one of its ships DUNTROON was requisitioned by the government to carry prisoners of war from Singapore to Australia. This same ship in 1940, was involved in a mishap when it accidentally rammed the GOORANGI , an Australian minesweeper in Port Phillip Bay. There was much loss of life as the GOORANGI immediately sank. Around 1960 after the sale of its biggest and most well known ship the DUNTROON the name of Melbourne Steamship Company dissapeared. A nice, reasonably early piece of shipping china. Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $50 - 75
