Pot Lid Ointment "Holloway's" style ointment pot. Black & White. 37 mm. 1860s
Very Good. A wonderful piece of Victorian Goldfields history. Dr L. L. Smith was an early Victorian parliamentarian and heavily involved in the early development of the colony. These ointment pots were made to try to take some of the huge market enjoyed by Holloways. Letters sent to England at the time show the Smith pots and lids were first ordered around 1856-7. 22 mm hairline down the right rear, on the inside this is more over around 28 mm. From this is a branch that goes diagonally on the outside about 10 mm, on the inside this is a similar distance. A few really little nicks to the base edge, the biggest is a flake that is only 3 x 2 mm, this is amongst a making mark and itself likely from making. Tiny nick or two to rim. Actually a really good example of this rare and important ointment pot. Grade: 7.2 Estimate: $1750 - 2000
