Luff Bros / Nhill & Jeparit. No potters stamp. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 1 Gallon. 290 mm. 1900s
Very Good. Luff Bros sold their Jeparit and Nhill business in 1911 to W. H. Petrie prior to moving to Adelaide. Yes, this is the very same Luff Bros. that had the extremely rare purple cordial made for them in Adelaide! Small glaze flake to upper lip, the upper lip is impressed with a 1 depicting the size of 1 gallon. Split to inner handle from making. The lower lip has some glaze misses and drips, the shoulder has glaze misses leaving white spots, all of which add to the character of this rare beauty. Very fine 50 mm hairline to lower rear. Dark scuff and scratch to front right near the base edge. Wonderful huge chunk of the lower right body has not been glazed, just a little glaze miss! Where the glaze has run down over this it has pooled up and is a bit lumpy. 90 mm glaze hairline to right upper body where the glaze is, as soon as it gets to the unglazed part it disappears, so is very much just a glaze hairline. Small pottery blowout to lower left. Some minor discolouration. Some scratches scattered around and some surface wear as well, nothing major though, the wear is mainly to the left rear part of the demijohn. Dark pottery blowout to right rear near the shoulder. Superb piece, not one I have seen before! Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $600 - 800
