Large Stoneware Bellarmine or Bartmann Jug: Ugly bearded face to neck / Body cartouche with Coat of Arms of a Bird in a Tree at the bottom of which looks like an upside down thistle and harp. GEW Initials around. Pottery Stoneware Large round stoneware jug. Salt Glaze. Half Gallon + 336 mm. 17th - 18th Century
Fair. The good thing this is all original. There is a cracked section down the back of 200 x 50 x 130 mm like a flap waiting to be opened. Having put some water inside this leaks at the bottom. On the left side there are open cracks of 170 mm and then 65 mm coming from an imperfection in the pottery. There has been plaster inside to stabilise the jug but this has some loose in the bottom. Have no doubt this is a superb large size Bellarmine that needs and is well worth a professional repair to stabilise the cracks. We are a bit nervous about posting this one as the jug is not entirely solid so would prefer pick up. Grade: 5.9 Estimate: $500 - 600
