Allens Paten / Foot Rot Ointment. No potters mark. (Patent spelt incorrectly on the jar) (Victoria) (James A. Lerk Collection) Medicine Ointment Salt Glaze. Impressed. 2 Pound 154 mm. 1860s
Very Good. We have now sold several variations of these Melbourne jars, this is yet another variation! A reasonably shiny glaze, with only two rows of small writing. Interestingly, this has Paten only on it and not Patent! With a deep impression, it is not a miss strike, it just was never there in the first place, so is an error. The inner lower neck has a few chip like marks that are pottery blowouts. A few little glaze flakes around the lip. Several flakes around the body including one between Rot and Ointment. Some of these are pottery blow outs from making, this is a very crudely made piece. Some do look to be impact marks though. 30 x 15 mm shallow flake under left base heel is amongst a rough spot from making. 15 x 10 mm chip to rear base edge. Crude splits or glaze misses scattered around. Some scratches. A great piece, an unusual piece and an early piece from Melbourne. This is from the James A. Lerk collection. Grade: 7.4 Estimate: $300 - 400
