Wide neck pickle with Cross. No base mark. (Melbourne, Victoria) Goldfields Pickle Applied top. Wide mouth. Aqua. 1 Pint. 189 mm. 1870s
Very Good. Later narrow neck examples with the cross are attributed to the Red Cross Pickle Company of Melbourne, this wide neck version I am suggesting is likely the same company, but one of their earlier bottles - they were advertising in the 1870s! Left rear lip has a 25 mm section of nibbled flakes, nothing large amongst these. Inclusion to right lower neck has a small fracture from it. Impact to front base edge over a bubble. Inclusion to lower rear body has a fracture from it on the inner surface. Surface bubble at front right shoulder. May have been oiled at some stage, this is hazy internally. Scuffs and scratches, heaviest to the shoulder but some others scattered around. Usage wear under the base. I am not sure I have seen this wide neck version before. Grade: 7 Estimate: $50 - 75
