Polar Bear on applied seal. Fired over pontil to base. Can be seen on this website as well http://www.gin-bottles.com/POLAR%20BEAR.htm Article in ABCR Volume 11 No. 4 April/May/June 2007 on history of Van Meerten & Zonen. Spirits Gin Dutch Case Gin, applied top. Applied seal to shoulder. Dark Olive Green. Quart. 293 mm. 1850s
Very Good. This has a large, hollow cone of glass internally which has its widest diameter pretty much matching the inner diameter of the lip. This piece would have been inside when made, feeling around the inner lip it feels like it was attached there which would have made filling and emptying this piece impossible. Rather than discard this faulty item, it looks like they have snapped the piece off so that it is loose inside and then used the item, so whoever drank from this would have potentially had broken bits of glass in their drink! Different times! The outer lip is crudely formed with folds, there is one chip looking mark over about 12 mm, this is likely from making. Hazy throughout. Shallow burst bubble to upper body near one edge. Stained throughout with dirt and grime as well. A few little nicks. Some scratches and scuffs scattered around. Very rare seal bottle. We will secure the lump of glass inside like we do marbles in codd bottles if this is to be posted. Grade: 7 Estimate: $750 - 1000
