W (Crown) R / (Crown) / WARD / Warranted. (United Kingdom). Miscellaneous. Tools. Cast Iron Axe Head with recently attached handle. About 170 mm across. 1830-1837
Good. (N/A). This was dug at the famous City Road tip in Melbourne decades ago. Needless to say, without the handle! The all important axe head is heavily corroded including some pitted and flaked areas. Plenty of knocks as well. The deeply impressed mark is still very legible. This shows the WR royal cypher of King William IV who ruled from 1830 to 1837, and so can be accurately dated to that timeframe, which works in well with having been found at City Road which was 1850s. A great piece of history!. Estimate: $100-150
