4 / M. Hughes / (Unofficial Australian Coat of Arms) / Advance Australia / Bourke. St. West. Melbourne. (Unmarked Bendigo Pottery, Victoria). Pottery. Water Filter. Waisted shape. Applied decoration. All White. 4 Gallon. 439 mm without lid. 1880s-1890s
Very Good. (7.5). No lid. 80 mm hairline down from front rim. A few relatively small, flat chips to the inner rim. Some minor flakes around the outer rim. Little glaze nick or two to the spigot. Some splits to the applied decoration from making. Upper part of the lower ribbon has some flaking. A few scratches and minor marks to the body. A great item in this shape. We have sold one before, but it was "3 Gallon?" Why question that, well it had the 3 impressed to the rim, where this one has a 4, usually signifying capacity. However, whilst this says 4 and the last one 3, this is exactly the same size as the last one! Therefore, I don't know whether this is 3 or 4 gallon? Either way, it is different to the last one. This is a rare one, not listed in the Bendigo Pottery book. M. Hughes, late McDonald & Hughes, was advertising as a monumental sculptor & marble importer in the 1880s, included in his advertising is the fact he was selling dripstone filters.. Estimate: $300-400
