2 Gall. / Hindmarsh / Pottery / Milne. (South Australia). Demijohn. Impressed. Impressed. Dark salt glaze. 2 Gallon. 385 mm. 1870s-1880s
Very Good. (7). Still has the original handle in place, the left side of this has a 17 x 5 mm flake, 2 7 x 5 mm flakes and then a larger 40 x 9 mm deeper flake - all on the outer edge so relatively minor. The outer edge of the lip on the left has flaking over about 40 x 8 mm, not overly deep here either. There are some minor flakes to the shoulder below the word Milne and some other minor spots of wear around the shoulder. Base edge has chips around it, the largest at the left rear is about 35 x 15 mm. Under the heel at the right rear is another larger chip of about 50 x 20 mm. Three chips to the front and left base edge, four or five around the right side at the base edge as well but all smaller than the previously measured example. 15 x 4 mm glaze flake to mid front right body. Patch of surface wear just through the glaze to the front mid left. Couple of potters blow outs to be found. Some scratches and small flakes to be found around the demijohn. Some making splits and other marks. An Amazing item, I have never seen a Hindmarsh Pottery demijohn before, but to be double stamped with Milne adds immensely to the desirability of this unique piece which is currently the only known example to collectors. Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity here! Estimate: $5000-7500
