J Lewis / s Moama. No potters stamp. (New South Wales). Demijohn. Impressed. Handled stoneware Demijohn. Impressed. Salt Glaze. 2 Gallon. 393 mm. 1880s - 1890s
Fair. (5.5). Large 30 x 7 mm chip to the right top. A big unstable crack runs from the front base edge up to the shoulder, then 160 mm over the shoulder to the back left and then 200 mm down the back left side to the lower body. At the back base edge is a big kiln kiss / chip over 70 x 20 mm. Stain down the front and right. The s before Moama in the print looks like just a mistake from the potter. Needs something to stabilise the crack but this is a very rare, possibly unique, early impressed Demijohn. Estimate: $200-400
