Fine dotted 1 on the front shoulder, near the outer rim. A. J. Knight & Leighton / Victoria Pottery / Lal Lal / 1876. (Victoria) (Votava Collection) Pottery, Lal Lal Lead glazed banded spirit barrel. Signed to base. One Gallon. 270 mm 1876
Very Good (7.9). Amazing piece of early Victorian pottery. The lip has two chips of 15 x 6 and 7 x 4 mm. The shoulder has small chips and flakes all around but nothing of major note. Scratches and wear are mostly just around the wide middle section. Unglazed round part at the front where a raised tap would have gone but not sure it was ever attached originally? The hand done stamp on the bottom is lovely and clear (and also has chalk in it to highlight. Note that Thomas Leighton joined the Lal Lal pottery in 1876 and this would seem to be a special piece made for that occasion. A stunning and unique piece of early Australian pottery, This is the same barrel as shown on page 243 of Australian Pottery: The First 100 Years, by Geoff Ford. Estimate: $4000-6000
