The Peoples Filter / (Australian Coat of Arms) / Advance Australia / The Australian Water Purifying Co / Melbourne. Impressed 2 to upper rim. No potters mark. Household Water Filter 2 Gallons. Unusual tan coloured water filter with applied slab seals for embossing and trade mark. 343 mm, not including lid.. 1880s
Excellent. Couple of tiny glaze flakes from outer rim at top. The left handle has a minor scrape through the glaze. There is a similar scrape to the outer part of the tap hole, almost could describe it simply as glaze wear. The rear near the base has five marks through the glaze, like something hard and sharp has it it a few times, these are minor, the worst one has caused a flake 3 x 5 mm. There is a piece of lead through the rear hole at the top hanging down inside, we are not sure what this was, but it seems to have been there for a purpose. On the inside where this comes in there may have been some minor filling done of an internal chip around this hole, as it seems that there is a cement type product around this hole. This is only internally, and does not detract whatsoever. The glaze on this piece is just amazing, there are several runs of lighter coloured glaze in the front left hand badge area, and around the tap hole is an inverted runs, like the filter was tipped upside down when the glaze had not dried, this has gathered to a large blob with a greenish tinge directly above the tap hole. There is a section down the rear left side where the glaze is a lighter colour. This comes with a fitting lid, probably not the original due to differences in colour. The lid is sound, it has one flake, 18 x 7 mm and a hairline, about 35 mm long. This is just an amazing piece of pottery, a filter that we have never seen before in a colour that you don't see in filters! NOTE: Postage will be high for a piece of this size and weight. Please factor that in if from interstate. Pick up can be arranged if so desired at no charge. Grade: 8.9 Estimate: $400 - 500
