Cherry Tooth Paste / Dentists / ("Laughing Parson" or Town Crier) / 116 Collins Street E. / Simmons and Dwyer. Pot Lid Tooth Paste Australian "Queens Head" shape pot lid. Multi-coloured with distinctive purple background and gold border. Medium-large size. (Lid No. 50, "Collecting Australian Pot Lids", by Robert Keil). 82 mm diameter. 1880s
Very Good. Simply a classic coloured, pictorial pot lid. On the face this one has a little impact mark on the cheek of the picture measuring 3 x 2 mm with a short 3 mm hairline emanating from this, not overly noticeable however. There is some light crazing spread around and nearly all of the gold border is intact. On the rim at approximately 10 o'clock is a small 4 x 2 mm flake just through the thickness of the glaze, with a further smaller glaze flake on the rim at about 12 o'clock, another at 2 o'clock, and another smaller one at 4 o'clock, with a smaller one again near this (these are just nicks in the glaze really). The flange is in excellent condition but the under side of the lid has an unusual shallow chip as shown in the pictures (measuring approximately 15 x 4 mm). Across from this is a little area of rust with a pattern of fine hairlines and crazing. These don't appear to go through the thickness of the lid. The centre of this rust spot is behind the little mark on the surface but these two things don't seem to be related. Comes with a matching shaped base in excellent condition. This is certainly a wonderful example of this iconic lid. Grade: 7.6 Estimate: $2800 - 3200
