Dakin Brothers / of China / Limited Aerated Water Torpedo Applied top, blob top, 13 oz. hamilton. Dark red amber. 224 mm. 1880s
Good. This bottle has been polished. This colour glass tends to be "soft" and so most examples known, which have been polished, have poor embossing. This example is somewhat better than most, the seams are still evident and the embossing is clear. There is a star crack in the right side, rear of the bottle, 25 mm in one direction, 20 mm in two other directions, and about 30 mm in a third direction. This is exceptionally hard to see due to the dark nature of the bottle and does not detract at all, this is a great show piece. There is a small flake to the top lip, 4 x 2 mm plus a couple of fisheye marks to the lip. There is a scratch / split below limited near the base which is about 40 mm long. Some minor haze internally which is very difficult to detect again due to the dark colour. Some minor pit marks remaining. This is a superb rarity, these bottles are found in Darwin, with this being one of the better examples, it looks stunning on display and is a true standout in any torpedo collection due to the unique colour (possibly the only maker in the world that used this colour?) Grade: 6.8 Estimate: $750 - 1000
