3 / Wm Candy / (Australian Coat of Arms) / Advance Australia / Fitzroy. No potters mark. Household Water Filter Salt Glaze waisted water filter, brown with dark brown bands. Applied slab seals. 3 gallon. 420 mm. 1880s
Very Good. Has been painted red and green and still has some paint to remove. Very fine hairline at front down about 35 mm. At front right at the end of the slab seal is another very fine hairline over about 100 mm down to the first brown band. At the left rear is a third fine hairline down about 65 mm. These are all very tight. There are a few shallow inner lip flakes, the biggest of which is about 18 x 12 mm but less than 1 mm deep at the worst. There are some flakes to the outer rim on right side, 12 x 6 mm is the worst here, with a run of smaller ones near this. The applied decoration and body of this piece are in great shape. The upper part of the straight section around the bottom has a flake at the front, 18 x 7 mm but shallow again, another near this is 20 x 4 mm and shallow. There are a few other minor flakes around the circumference of the filter at this point. The tap hole has some wear to the top of it, there is a large chip to the right outer side of the tap hole, about 25 x 20 mm. Rear base chip, 10 x 7 mm. Even though there are a few marks, once the remaining paint is cleaned from this piece it will be a fantastic piece of Australian pottery! One of two wonderful and rare Candy filters in this auction. Grade: 7.25 Estimate: $200 - 250
