Cains' / Australian Rose / Cold Cream / Prepared at / Cains & Cos / Pharmacy / 78 King St / Sydney. Pot Lid Cold Cream White round lid with black print. 69 mm diameter. 1890s
Excellent. Fine, slightly rusted crazing throughout. A few small scratches to the glaze. The face is just about perfect on this piece. The underside of the flange where it meets the base has a few small flakes, the largest is only 5 x 3 mm and very shallow, this is actually glazed over and so was from manufacture. The others are 6 x 2 mm, 4 x 3 mm, and only 2 x 1 mm, all of which are very shallow. There is a tiny L shaped mark on this bottom edge as well, 4 mm in one direction, 2 mm in another. Some minor rusty discolouration underneath. This is a superb rarity from Sydney. It comes with a fitting base, the base is a Toogood Patent, so is not original. It has a shallow flake chip to the upper part and some heavy crazing. One of these are featured on Bottleguide, there is no sales history and close examination shows the BG example to be the exact same lid. A very rare Australian lid that would suit the finest of pot lid collections. Grade: 8.5 Estimate: $1250 - 1500
