Amazing huge Chinese Teapot with jade glaze. Chinese Teapot Large Chinese Teapot with jade glaze. 225 mm. 1880s?
Fair. Difficult one to grade, the reasons will become apparent. Some wear and minor flakes around the opening where the lid would have sat. Some minor edge wear and glaze flakes to the lugs on either side of the handle and to the handle area. Now, the edge near the opening at the top has an impact mark with a crack over about 18 mm, a glaze flake in this area is about 10 x 3 mm. On the opposite upper surface behind the pouring spout is a 25 mm crack that has flaked edges, a hairline continues on from this. This crack joins up with another that goes 70 mm from the handle to the vertical surface about one inch to the left of the spout, this is reasonably fine on the upper surface, but then it goes down the body right to the bottom. On this downward section, the upper part is open and to me looks like a bit of glaze has gone over the edge in a couple of places, so this open crack looks to be from making? Where it joins up with the base under the jade glaze is a crude making mark in the pottery in the form of a split which further lends credence to my theory that it is a making mark. There are a couple of other splits to the unglazed lower part. The glaze has dark tight crazing throughout. Some dark spots to the upper glaze is from making as it is underglaze. The pouring spout has wear and flakes around it. What a great piece of pottery, we have never seen anything like this large teapot and rate it quite highly. Grade: 5.9 Estimate: $150 - 200
