Burgerspital / (Fancy design) / Wurzburg all in applied seal on shoulder. Smooth base. Wine Sealed "Chestnut" shaped wine. Applied seal to shoulder. Applied "ring" seal. Red-amber. About 20 oz. 175 mm. 1870s-1880s
Excellent. Some scratches to the sides. The back right lip has a very shallow 5 x 4 mm chip. Lovely colour and a beautifully struck seal. This German winery is still in existence today: http://www.buergerspital.de/wineestate/index.html. The bottle shape is in fact important and known as a "Bocksbeutel" - Master Johann Baptist Sartorius explained in 1862 what a "Bocksbeutel" is: namely "a flattened, round bottle shaped like a leather pouch for bottling the Stein wine". In 1726 the Council of the City of Würzburg decided that the "Bocksbeutel" be the mark of quality compared with poorly produced wines. Grade: 8.2 Estimate: $80 - 120
