John Ilott / Red Lion Hotel. No potters mark. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 1/2 Gallon. .
Good. Repaired. The vendor had this professionally repaired as there were a few lip chips. The repairer has fully coloured and glazed the entire inner and outer lip making it impossible to see where the original chips were. Dark discolouration around the rear lower body. Rusty coloured discolouration scattered around. A little wear with some scratches. One or two little glaze nicks to the handle. There is reference to the Ilott name in association with the Red Lion Hotel in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne in 1877. Most references, however, refer to the Red Lion Hotel in the 1880s in Cubitt Street, Richmond with John Ilott transferring his licence to other parties in May 1888. This would fit in well with the age of this demijohn, so I would suggest it is from Richmond, Victoria. Extremely rare, with a hotel name this is a lovely piece. Grade: 6 Estimate: $$150.00 - $250.00
