Bristol Blue Rolling Pin Painted For A Friend with picture of a Boat called The Vigilant. Glassware Rolling Pin Antique Bristol Blue Rolling Pin, Painted by Sailor as a Gift. 385 mm. 1860s
Very Good. Decorated glass rolling pins were generally given as gifts by sailors to their wives and girlfriends. They were usually colourfully decorated with a sailing ship and words of endearment or a date. One end of the pin always has a small hole in it, the reason for this was to fill the pin with warm water to assist in the rolling of pastry. Having been built in the 1790's, THE VIGILANT survived for more than 130 years when she met her final fate during a hurricane in September 1928 in Christiansted Harbor, St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The manuafcture of this pin suggest mid 1800s as an age, but could be either side of there. Some inner stain. Only a few minor outer marks. The design has sadly faded somewhat. There was writing to the right which is illegible. A fabulous piece, one of several rolling pins on offer in this auction. Grade: N/A Estimate: $$200.00 - $250.00
