Lee & Drew / Ballarat. No potters stamp. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed Handled stoneware demijohn. Spigot hole to front. Bristol Glaze. 2 Gallon. 385 mm. 1891
Good. Unusual demijohn, quite a tall shape with the spigot at front. Restored lip chips around the circumference with painting over the top of the lip as well, not sure there are any upper lip repairs though? Handle is original and undamaged. There is some lacquer around the upper demijohn used for the lip repairs. The side of the handle has a cut in it, looks like a hacksaw has put a 8 mm cut in it. The left rear shoulder along the line between the tan and white has a deep gouge over about 80 mm, again looks like a cut from a hacksaw or similar. Couple of small flakes to base edge. Some discolouration in places. A few minor scrape marks to spigot. Some scratches and minor marks. Plenty of crude making marks. Rare Ballarat Demijohn, one of two sizes we have in this auction! John Drew had been involved in Lee & Co's brewery business for only a few months when he committed suicide in April 1891. Grade: 6.5 Estimate: $200 - 300
