Pair of Prahran chemist bottles: 1. G. Pleasance / Prahran. Base Mark: M. 2. Witt & Co / Chemists / Prahran. No base mark. (Victoria) Medicine Chemist 1. Applied top, tooled finish. Aqua. 8 oz. 2. Applied top. Aqua. 6 oz. 1. 170 mm. 2. 154 mm.. 1890s-1910s

1. Very Good. Polished. Small burst bubble at front base edge. Little flake under base heel to the right rear corner. A few deeper scuffed scratches in places. Some other minor scuffs and scratches with the odd tiny impact mark. George Pleasance had a chemist shop in Chapel Street Prahran near the Town Hall. In 1902 he opened a larger new premises opposite the Prahran Arcade. On New Years Eve, 1930 at the age of 71, George passed away at his home, "Cooyar" on Malvern Road in Toorak. 2. Very Good. Polished. Some dullness to the surface in places. Small section to rear base edge where there is some deep wear. Tiny impact to left rear shoulder corner. Some small scuffs and scratches to be found. Witt & Co were at 171 Chapel Street, Prahran. Mr. William Witt, J.P., passed away on Tuesday 8th February, 1910 at South Melbourne at the ripe age of 77 years. He had been in active association with the district for many years. The late Mr. Witt was born at Salisbury, England, on 14th December, 1833. He chose the profession of chemist and druggist, and purchased a pharmacy at Downton, near by his birth place. He arrived in Melbourne on February 6th, 1857, with his wife, and next day a start was made for Beechworth by coach, where he opened a chemist shop. Whilst in Beechworth he was elected a member of the local council, and was mayor of the municipality in 1867. He was secretary of the Ovens District Hospital during the whole of his soujourn in town. He was elected in 1868 to the Legislative Assembly as the representative of the Murray electorate, and he held his seat for the Murray in the House in the 6th, 7th and 8th Victorian Parliaments. Coming then to Melbourne he took up his residence at Burwood, where he was elected a member of the municipality of Nunawading Shire. In the 1890s he removed to Prahran, where he opened a pharmacy in Chapel Street, at the corner of Victoria Street, afterwards to 171 Chapel Street. Mr. Witt was made a justice of the peace in 1863, and at the death of the late Dr. Fetherstone, was unanimously elected to the chairmanship of the Prahran bench, which office he filled with credit and honor until his retirement in 1908. He was for many years president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, and upon his retirement from the council early in 1909 they made him an honorary life member. He was also for a long term president of the Dental Board of Victoria, and when the faculty of dentistry was made part of the University course, he was nominated as the member for the government.
