Terracotta Butter Cooler with print: Butter / Cooler / 1/3. Pottery Australian Terracotta Butter Cooler with Black print! About 225 mm high on base. 1900s
Good. This is almost certainly Australian Pottery, just which pottery is unknown to us but likely a Victorian potter. This is the first we have ever seen with black print and a price on it! A fantastic rarity in my mind! The lid is in pretty good condition for terracotta. Some wear, the black print has faded in places. There are a couple of fine cracks / hairlines coming up from the bottom, hard to see in places, around half the way up they go. The base could be described as poor! There is a chip to the upper rim. About 50% of the inner face is pitted and flaked. On this same side the outer face is heavily deteriorated again around 50% of the circumference. You can see the potters pattern over the other half, but the poor half is quite chipped and flaked throughout. An extremely interesting piece of early pottery, can't say I have ever seen any printed terracotta items? I have graded this down due to the base damage, but grading on the lid only would be much higher in the very good region. Grade: 6 Estimate: $100 - 150
