Pair of Pottery Garden Planters. One is marked Hughes. Pottery Hughes Both salt glaze. Umarked one is 130 mm high. Hughes is 125 mm high.. 1880s
Unmarked one is very good. Many potteries made this type of object, this could be from any of them. This has a few small flakes to the inner edge. Some glaze wear to the legs and feet, patchy fine wear elsewhere. Some scratches scattered around. Grime inside which will clean out. The Hughes one is marked at both ends. This is very heavy. Hughes Pottery was in Newcastle, it was Hughes and Drury in the 1860s, then in 1888 S. Hughes' new and extensive brick and pottery works opened at Burwood, this will likely date to this period. There is a chip to the inner rim. Each end has a flake or two. Crazing type hairlines throughout, likely making marks. Some splits. Grime and dirt which should clean out. An interesting pair. Being so long and heavy, these exceed Australia Posts size limits and so pick up will be required, alternatively you can arrange your own courier. Grade: N/A Estimate: $100 - 150
