J. Dovey // T. Field / Potter / Sydney. (Sutton Forest, New South Wales) Ginger Beer Impressed Dump. Salt Glaze. Impressed. 20 oz. 200 mm. 1850s
Good. There is a crack that runs from underneath the top, through the O of Dovey and then down the front finishing at the top of the D of Field. This is quite easily seen but is fine and only just catches a fingernail through the main section over the shoulder and down the upper front. About 20 mm of grey glaze on the back top looks like a shallow kiln kiss. A bit of wear around the body including to some high "pimples" formed by a bit of expansion in the kiln. Base edge has some wear with one small chip of 7 x 3 mm and a little blowout next to it. A raised section to the mid base from making means the bottle doesn't quite sit flat. Strong stamps nicely lined up. Great reddish brown colours with iron spots throughout. Potters fingerprint marks down the lower mid front. It's a shame the crack is down the front but by the same token it is very fine. Only example known from J. Dovey and a stunning large size to boot! Grade: 6.9 Estimate: $2000 - 3000
