L.T. Piver / 10, Boult Strasbourg,10. / Paris. / And 160 Regent St London. No base mark. (France, United Kingdom) Pot Lid Ointment Tin glaze large ointment pot, all white with blue print. 78 mm. 1840s
Very Good. Not one I have seen before, being tin glaze, this is likely from the period when Piver first opened his shop at 160 Regent Street in London, which I believe was the 1840s. A large piece for an ointment pot too! As is often the case with tin glaze items, this has some glaze flakes. 15 mm nibbled section to the flared rim at the front, to the right of this is another 11 mm section which is a bit deeper than just glaze. Then there are two upper lip glaze flakes which are small right of this. Right underside of flared lip rim has a 15 mm flake. Then the rear has a 10 mm flake. Tiny flake to inner base. Right base edge has a thin dark mark, could be wear or a making mark, it is hard to tell. Some spots of crud under the lip should soak off. Some glaze misses and dips from making. A lot of pottery in this, the inside goes down only about 45 mm, when this is 78 mm high. A wonderful item. These come in two sizes, with two hauls having been found many years ago, one has not been on the open market for some time now. L.T. Piver started life in France in 1774 as a small business that sold perfumed gloves. Michel Adam Piver was the founder, later succeeded by his cousin Paul Guillaume Dissey. In 1813 Louis-Toussaint Piver became a partner, & after Dissey had died L.T.’s initials were added to the company name, which it kept even when he was succeeded by Alphonse Piver. Eventually the firm had shops all over the fashionable world and from the 1840s at Regent Street in London. This UK branch closed in 1880. Grade: 7.2 Estimate: $150 - 200
