T. Field / Potter / Sydney. (New South Wales) Demijohn Impressed Salt glaze, darker neck glaze. Handled. Impressed. 2 Gallon. 377 mm. 1870s
Good. Minor glaze wear to inner lip edge. A shallow upper lip flake or two have been repaired. At front right shoulder, diagonally down towards the lower left a crack has been repaired. A superb job, we have a picture showing this demijohn prior to the crack repair. This repair can be traced if you look carefully to the base edge, under which you can see the hairline which has not been touched up underneath. About mid way down, another branch went off up towards the left shoulder, this has been very well touched up as well. Handle is original and untouched. Small potters blow out or two. Some scratches and minor marks. All in all, a great example of an extremely rare and important piece of early Australian pottery. Grade: 6.5 Estimate: $2000 - 2500
