Gippsland / Hop Bitters Co. No potters stamp. (Victoria) Demijohn Impressed Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 2 Gallon. 385 mm. 1890s
Fair. Structurally this is fine, but the glaze has flaked off over the entire bottom half and there are several glaze flakes around the tan neck. Glaze wear around the outer lip edge with a couple of small glaze flakes. Thin, small flake near one edge of the handle has a 60 mm hairline from it along the edge of the handle. There is a crack across the handle too. Right mid body has a three way hairline, upper part is 130 mm to the shoulder, towards the rear it goes down about 60 mm, and the tird way towards the front it goes across about 40 mm or so. Discoloured. Some scratches. An exceptionally rare and important demijohn fro Gippsland in Victoria. The only demijohn I know of for a bitters company - bitters was used in very small quantities so this would have taken years to empty! Grade: 5 Estimate: $1000 - 1500
