Brownsword / & Cooper / Tileworks / Norwell. (Morwell, Victoria) Pottery Tile Terracotta roof tile. 265 x 170 mm. 1890s
Very Good. A few flakes and chips around the edges. Two holes to upper rear I think are the way it was made? Some stains. Really interesting tile. Note that Morwell is incorrectly spelt Norwell on this tile. The vendor tells us this was off the oldest house in Morwell? Looks like the started in around 1890 with the works situated midway between Morwell and The Ridge, apparently on the south east of the town just off Wilson Street on O'Flaherty's selection. The pottery closed down when proprietors joined the Western Australian gold rush, so was not in business for a long time. Grade: 7.5 Estimate: $30 - 50
