Roberts & Co / Trade / (NIW) / Mark / Union St Wickham. No potters mark. (New South Wales). Ginger Beer. Cork Stoppered. Dump. Salt Glaze. Impressed. 10 oz. 171 mm. 1870s. 1887+
Very Good. (7.8). Shallow 5 x 5 mm flake to right rear outer lip. A few tiny spots of wear to upper lip. Couple of little spots of wear through the glaze to the left shoulder. 10 x 4 mm glaze flake to the left rear base edge. 4 x 4 mm really shallow flake under the rear base. Couple of tiny blowouts to the body from making. Some small spots of wear here and there. A few little glaze nicks to the found. Overall, a great example of a very rare bottle, the first we have sold. Quite an early one, possibly 1870s? Roberts bought the Newcastle Ice Works in 1887 and registered the trade mark that same year. Has the NIW trade mark of the Newcastle Ice Works which Roberts must have operated, this would have to be one of their earliest bottles? Estimate: $500-750
