2 Q / E. Pantons / Enfield Hotel. No potters mark. (Launceston, Tasmania). Spirits. Whisky/Whiskey. Two tone, tan top, cream body. Blue print. 2 Quart. (Tasmanian Pottery). 228 mm. 1880s
Very Good. (7.7). Elijah Edward Panton obtained the licence for the Enfield Hotel in Charles Street, Launceston in 1868. This jug was more likely for Edward Henry Panton though, who had the same hotel in the 1880s. 15 x 10 mm dark spot to mid right is amongst a larger discoloured patch, which is all a making mark. 18 x 21 mm kiln kiss to front left is a making mark. 40 mm surface scratch to mid left. 40 x 10 mm chip under heel to rear below the handle, 10 x 4 mm sliver to right rear under base edge and a 14 x 7 mm chip under the heel to the front right base edge. All of these are probably potters pulls from making but are there regardless. An amazing piece for several reasons. This was made at one of the Launceston potteries, probably Campbell's Pottery, and so is one of the very few Australian made whisky jugs. This is 2 quart in size so a big beast, which makes it stand out from most jugs which are 1 quart in size. Oh, and this is extremely rare and sure to be a standout on your pottery or whisky display. As far as we can ascertain, this is one of only two known to collectors. Don't miss this opportunity!.
