Sold for A$770

C J Upton / Cannister Tea Mart / Launceston. Potters stamp: Doulton & Watts / Lambeth Pottery / London. (Tasmania). Household. Jar. Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 1 Gallon. 263 mm. 1850s

Very Good. (7.5). Glaze miss around some of the inner lip I thought was wear for starters, but it is not. A few little glaze flakes around the rim. 9 x 12 mm potters blowout to rear shoulder. Little blowout below this and a kiln kiss around a little from this and a bit lower as well. Two small blowouts to the upper right, slightly larger 5 x 4 mm blowout to mid front and a few other smaller examples scattered around. 10 x 4 mm very shallow flake to base edge. Little dint to left rear base edge from making, up from this is a hairline over about 100 mm, it does look like a making mark though. 55 mm scratch is slightly discoloured up from rear base edge. Some other making marks scattered around. Some surface wear in places. A very rare and early Tasmanian piece, Doulton & Watts became Doulton & Co in 1854, and Probin was advertising that he was successor to C. J. Upton at his Canister Tea Mart in 1857. Estimate: $750-1000
