C. H. Morris & Sons / Rutherglen // 24 (printed). No potters stamp. (Victoria). Demijohn. Impressed. All white. Impressed, with printed number. Unglazed body. 2 Gallon. 380 mm. 1920s

Near Mint. (9.2). In 1859 George Francis Morris established a vineyard near Rutherglen in Victoria. By 1885 this grew to over 200 acres, making Morris the largest wine producer in the Southern Hemisphere! In 1897 Charles Hughes Morris, George's son, established a new vineyard at Mia Mia a few kilometres away. In 1917 the winery was sold. Charles Henry Morris then became a wine maker in Rutherglen in 1953. Famous for their fortified wines, who hasn't partaken in a Morris of Rutherglen Muscat or Port? Trove advertising for C. H. Morris and Sons can be found from 1922 to 1939, so even though the Morris website says the winery was sold in 1917, this company was still operating after that period obviously. This demijohn would likely date to the 1920s and would be from Charles Hughes Morris & Sons. Condition wise, there is a little surface impact type mark to upper lip. There are a couple of pitted scratches to the shoulder edge. Gouge type mark to base edge is a making mark. Some discoloured spots and a few scratches to the unglazed body. Wonderful demijohn which I've never seen before. This would be a stand out piece in your collection being an all white impressed winery demijohn, with the large printed number as well! Being from a famous current winery also adds to the desirability in my mind. Estimate: $600-800
