W. C. Buik & Co. / Importers. Potters stamp: Old Kent Rd / T. Smith & Co / London. (Adelaide, South Australia). Household. Jar. Two tone, tan top, off white body. Impressed. 1/2 gallon. 214 mm. 1880s
Excellent. (8.3). This jar is listed in "Brewers & Aerated Water Manufacturers in South Australia - 1836-1936 by Shueard and Tuckwell" and is in the rated A category. This comes with a lid with three finger holes which is likely original, this has a flat chip to the top edge and another nick or two. The jar itself is great, this style of flared out lip is susceptible to damage, this one only has some minor spots of wear. Kiln kiss type mark to left shoulder has some wear to the lumpy parts. Some crazing from manufacture. Couple of really minor flakes under the heel, possibly potters pulls from making. Some scratches and minor spots of wear. Buik's premises were in Rundle Street, Adelaide where he operated as an ironmonger and importer of fancy goods. His containers are historical relics relating to one of the movers and shakers of 19th century Adelaide. He was mayor of Kensington from 1866 to 1868, Mayor of Adelaide from 1878 to 1879 and a member of the Legislative Council in the South Australian Parliament from 1881 to 1888. We have only sold a bung jar from this company before, never this lidded jar with flared lip. Estimate: $300-400
