(British Coat of Arms) / Rhubarb. Large pontil scar to base.. Medicine. Chemist. Large Pharmacy display jar. Painted design inside. Multi-coloured decoration. Original lid. 500 mm without lid. Mid to late 1800s
Very Good. (N/A). No physical damage at all. Grime around the lip, much of the original protective material is around the lip, some of this is missing. Lid is undamaged as well, it does have some scratches. There are some paint flakes to the lid. Now for the decoration on the main jar - not sure if the background colour is original or not? However, the main design certainly has had a fair bit of work. The word Rhubarb is only ghosted now, there is part of a couple of the letters that show the original fancy design of the lettering. The coat of arms looks to have had extensive flaking to it, I think to minimise this the flaked areas have been painted gold which is quite effective. You can still see some detail, just not all of it. A lovely item, I haven't given this a grading as structurally it is great, but this is all about the painted design which has issues. Please note, this is the same jar that was in Auction 55 with an $1,800 reserve, the vendor has now requested that it be sold with no reserve. Estimate: $200-400
