Peel Bros / Sandhurst // Adams & Barretts / Jersey / Patent // (Around base) Lumb & Co Makers Castleford. No under base mark. (Bendigo, Victoria). Aerated Water. Patent. Stick Bottle (Adams & Barretts / Hogbens Patent). Applied top. Lime Greenish Aqua. 10 oz. 226 mm. 1870s

Very Good. (7.5). Dull and just a little scuffy all over. 5 x 3 mm chip to the edge of the lip above the Peel Bros embossing. A fleabite just around from this first chip. 5 x 4 mm chip at the base edge which is a bit rounded but that seems to have happened from use. Unusual small embossing and greenish colour. An article in the Bendigo Advertiser dated December 26th 1872 mentions Peel Bros having sole rights to these bottles in Sandhurst (and indeed that only Peel Bros and Dixon of Melbourne had rights for Victoria at that time). The article also mentions that the bottles were now made at Footscray although perhaps they were just shipped from there as Melbourne Glass Works were still in Port Melbourne at this time. This one of course has the Lumb & Co makers embossing but the base and colour are quite different to normal Lumb bottles so possibly a mould sent to Australia for use by the local glass works. William Bruce took over Peel Bros in 1878 and continued using these patent bottles with his own name on them after that. This is a very rare and historically interesting bottle. First example we have had through. Estimate: $1000-2000
