Killingley & Co / Nottingham / 1642. No potters mark. (United Kingdom). Demijohn. Impressed. Salt Glaze. Slab Seal. Impressed. 1/2 Gallon. 242 mm. 1840s

Very Good. (7.8). Thanks to AA Auctions: "1832-1840 - Killingley, Melicent, Wine & Spirit merchant, Smithys Row, Nottingham. In 1837, Mr. Bagshaw was assistant to Mrs. Killingley. 1840 - Dissolution of partnership, Killingley & Co Nottingham. (Continued trading as 'Killingley & Co') 1869 - Sale of Killingleys Wine Vaults. In latter years the business had been run by Messrs Bagshaw but still traded as Killingley & Co. The business was sold following the deaths of the owners Edwin & George Bagshaw. It was sold by auction to Mr. Turner of the Black Boy Hotel, Nottingham for £7,750". A fantastic looking demijohn. The slab seal has several splits, but these are all from making. Some whiter marks down the front and right side are within the glaze, these are also making marks. Glaze missed scattered around, mostly near the base edge, again from making. Couple of flakes to heel are likely potters pulls from making. Crazing throughout. There are several heavier glaze hairlines around this demijohn, all likely from making too, though there is a heavier patch to mid front left with some discolouration amongst them that are borderline. Great piece of history. Estimate: $150-200
